1 Cor. 3:10-15—-According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. (KJV)

heringPhoto Our home in Layton’s Chelsie Park subdivisions just northeast of Swan Lakes Golf Course has been completed. I wish that I could tell you that Donna and I are proud owners of a beautiful new home. But I can’t because we’re not. While it may at first glance have the appearance of beauty, it is in fact a demonstration of the old adage that beauty is only skin deep.

Textured ceilings, walls painted a sparkling white and wall-to-wall Berber carpeting give a cosmetically pleasing effect to this spacious floor plan that attracted us in the first place. The master bedroom and voluminous walk-in closet. The colors of the materials we selected from tiny samples actually are quite handsome and complement each other nicely. The home is perfectly situated on a comparatively generous yard at the end of a cul-de-sac.

So, “What’s the rub?” I’m glad you asked.

The sparkling white walls are mere whitewash to hide walls that bend and bow and doorways that list askew. The carpeting that stretches the length and breadth of the house disguises contours of a subfloor that wobbles under the tread of an average adult male and contains subtle yet discernible hills and valleys. The saddle tan roof looks like it was slapped on by ten-year-old dealing cards and leaves scraps of shingles missing at roff’s edge, inviting wind, rain and vermin to accelerate its deterioration. yes, all that glitters is not gold. There is a lot of fool’s gold in them thar hills.

Unfortunately, Donna and I were the fools in this case. we were taken in by appearances and the desires of our hearts along with some special “this month only” financial inducements that made for an “offer we couldn’t refuse.” We looked at the floor plan and forgot to check the materials. we looked at the cosmetics and forgot to examine work-manship. Instead of picking the colors we should have been inspecting to see if the builders knew which way to face the crown of the floor joists and wall studs. Take it from one who’s been taken, there is no pleasure in having pretty carpets, cabinets and countertops when you feel like you’re in a carnival funhouse.

We were almost stuck with a lemon . . . no, make that an apple. An apple like that which tempted Adam and eve in the Garden of Eden. Only, I played the part of Eve, I’m the one who pulled my dear spouse into a rotten deal.

But praise the Lord we are not stuck with a crooked, wobbly, inferior house. We have been reimbursed the money we had put down on the house, and all the money lost was that worth of loan fees and insulation we had installed in the garage. It could be worse, we could have been forced to buy the house and live with all the problems. We will survive and God will probably work some good out of it as well. In fact, I think he already has.

People who fall for the religions and philosophies of man , however, are not so blessed: “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” and “All other ground is sinking sand.” Outside of Christ there are no refunds, no money back guarantees. If you die without Christ, you will be stuck with the cheap imitation with which the devil tempted Adam and Eve. If you die without Christ, you will be forced to live forever in that hell of a house that the devil dresses up to look like a sparkling mansion.

Thanks be to God that He has laid a sure FOUNDATION in His Son, Jesus Christ, through His suffering, death and resurrection. And thanks be to God that through faith in that same Jesus Christ we have a place in His Father’s beautiful, masterfully built house forever.

May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you and keep you always. And may you always build your hope on His sure foundation and not on the crooked, wobbly and inferior foundations of man Amen.

    Hi Kurt!
Love your aesthetics! I have a huge picture of that
same scene, Luther before the Diet at Worms, hanging above my fireplace! In a thin black frame! I love it.
BTW, click on the Pastor tab and make some corrections, ok? In the 1 Cor. 3 passage – add an “e”
to wis. And in your house description, add an “a” to beuty. I don’t remember any other misspellings – not to be critical, but helpful, hopefully. Love ya, bro.

Thanks, Ted. Looks like my buddy, Norm, has made the corrections.

  3. Pr. Robert W. Schaibley says:

Dear brother, hereby we transfer to you our member, Julia From, per her request. Blessings to you and her. She is a special and faithful member.

    Cordially,

    Robert.
